Traceability Standards Initiative

Supporting Global Traceability Standards in the Democratic Republic of Congo Mining Sector

The Need for a Tracaeability Program in the DRC Mining Sector

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries, with vast reserves of copper, cobalt, gold, tantalum, tin, and other critical minerals essential to the global green economy and digital transformation. However, despite this potential, the DRC’s mining sector continues to face critical challenges related to transparency, responsible sourcing, and global market access. A national traceability program is not only a regulatory imperative but a strategic necessity for long-term economic growth and reputation management.

Implementing a traceability program enables the DRC to verify the origin, movement, and processing of minerals from mine to market. This strengthens efforts to combat illicit trade, child labor, and environmental exploitation, while reinforcing global confidence in Congolese minerals. More importantly, such a system helps legitimate miners—both industrial and artisanal—gain recognition, secure fair market access, and attract responsible investment. By adopting global traceability standards such as those of GS1, the DRC can digitally authenticate mine sites, assign global identifiers, and link mineral data to customs, logistics, and buyers. This is essential for compliance with international regulations, including the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation and U.S. Dodd-Frank Act.

In a world demanding greater accountability, the DRC must act now. A robust traceability program is a pathway to formalizing the mining sector, increasing government revenues, protecting communities, and ensuring the country reaps full value from its natural wealth.

About the Initiative

GS1 South Africa, in collaboration with the GS1 Global Office, is supporting the adoption of traceability standards in the DRC mining industry. We are launching the first phase by allocating Global Location Numbers (GLNs) and Company Prefixes to leading mining operations to strengthen transparency, sustainability, and responsible sourcing.
